How to Seduce Your Web Visitors
excerpted from Online Marketing Superstars
by Maria Veloso, Director of Web Copywriting University

Seducing your web visitors is like a dance, wherein you lead and they follow. You make a move, they respond accordingly, you take another step and they follow your lead in a seamless relay that ultimately leads to the sale.

The only objective of your headline is to get your prospect to read the opening sentence.  The only objective of your opening sentence is to get your prospect to read the second sentence.  The only objective of your second sentence is to get your prospect to read the third sentence – and so on and so forth until the prospect pulls out his/her credit card and buys what you’re selling.  When the sale is consummated, the seduction is complete.  But if you let go at any step, the sales process comes to a screeching halt.

Using the dating example once again, which of the following opening lines would get a positive response from a woman?

A:  “I’m a movie producer, I own a mansion in the Hollywood Hills, and that’s my Porsche parked across the street.  So what’ll it be – your place or mine?”

OR

B:  “Excuse me, Miss.  My friend and I can’t seem to agree on something.  Was it Russell Crowe or Mel Gibson who starred in ‘Gladiator?'”

Most people would agree that opening line A would strike out – and maybe even warrant a slap in the face.  And yet that’s exactly how most marketers sell on the Web. They virtually say to their web visitors, “I have the world’s greatest widget at the cheapest price.  Buy it now!”

Now, let’s take a look at opening line B.  It certainly wouldn’t offend a woman, and it’s likely to get a polite response.  But where does the seduction come in, you ask?

That’s the whole point.  The seduction starts by getting someone’s attention and putting that someone in the proper frame of mind to know you better.  No matter how good your offer might be, the online population is still a skeptical bunch – and they’re not likely to buy unless they know you and trust you.

On a website, you don’t start selling the moment your web visitor arrives.  All you want initially is for your prospect to respond to you in some way.  Then, you get a virtual dialogue going and build rapport that paves the way to the sale.  Isn’t that the objective of all direct-response marketing?

How exactly do you get your prospect to respond on a website?  Some of the most powerfully seductive mechanisms I use are involvement devices.

Involvement devices are devices used to get people “involved” with your sales copy.
They magnetize people to read every word of your copy.  Getting your website visitors to read your copy is Job 1 if your objective is to sell them something.

When you use involvement devices, you effectively “own your audience.”  That is, you hold your audience captive.

This was excerpted from Mitch Meyerson's Online Marketing Superstars Home Study Course.

Your Coaching Fieldwork:  Re-read your marketing copy from a 'seduction' point of view. Do you get your prospect's attention in a way that leaves them wanting to know you better? Or do you demand them to buy your product 'right now?' Prospects buy from businesses they know, like and trust. What are two steps you can take to present your copy in a more friendly manner?

How Color Affects Your Marketing - Revisited

We received a lot of positive feedback on our issue on Colors, however several of you wrote in to say we neglected to include the color Yellow. This is for our yellow-lovers out there...

Yellow is an optimistic color that almost always evokes a positive response. Yellow gets you motivated; it stimulates creative and intellectual energy; it's cheerful and easygoing.

Yellow represents 'courage' in Japan and is the color for merchants in India. Yellow ribbons are used to welcome someone home. Be careful, though, it can be the color of cowardice and deceit. This 'happy color' is favored by people of high intellect.

Use yellow with orange to carry out a healthy theme. Use it with blue for high-contrast or gray for high-tech.
